Before you remove a big folder

Start with ownership

A folder’s size tells you how much space it represents, not how important it is. Identify the application or project that created it. Check whether it contains source material, backups, downloads or reproducible output.

Choose an appropriate cleanup method

Manage virtual disks, databases and container storage through their owning tools. For installer archives, confirm you can download or restore them if needed. Close applications before reviewing their caches.

Keep a recovery path

Back up unique work. Use reviewed Trash actions where supported and confirm important applications still function before emptying Trash yourself.
